Summary of Position

Under minimal supervision, provide administrative and coding support to the coding department and Coding Education Specialists. Assigns limited diagnosis and CPT codes to medical procedures. Reviews and audits medical records in order to ensure the accuracy and proper coding of diagnoses and procedures. General understanding of CMS/Medicare regulations, as well as technical knowledge of the International Classification of Disease (ICD-10) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT-4) classification systems. Reports to a Coding Supervisor. As a remote position we are requiring that the candidate be able to attend trainings and staff meetings in MA in person. MA state and surrounding states' candidates will be given strongest consideration.

Essential Functions

*Performs basic coding for medical visits or procedures.

*Using a solid knowledge of medical coding, analyzes and reviews coded and documented services for accuracy and for missing information. Makes basic corrections independently. Works with Certified Medical Coder to resolve more complex and detailed issues.

*Enters data of outpatient/inpatient coded encounters directly into the Electronic Medical Record.

*Enters charges into the Practice Management System and reviews billing history.

*Ensures that CPT and ICD codes are aligned. Verifies that the relationship between the diagnosis and treatment is accurate so that the claim will be reimbursed.

*May evaluate medical records and reports in order to assess accuracy of diagnosis and procedure codes.

*Creates and maintains database and/or spreadsheet files for department.

*Maintains data tracking for Coding Education Training sessions. Works with internal clients and outside vendors on scheduling as needed.

*Keeps up to date on billing/coding rules, including the annual update of CPT-4 and ICD-10 codes.

*Routes or answers routine correspondence via email or staff messaging. May flag documents requiring immediate attention to others in the department.

*Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, local and company policies and procedures.

Minimum Requirements

Education: High school graduate (or equivalent education, training or experience). Associates degree preferred.

Skills and Experience: Skills and experience typically acquired through at least three years billing and coding experience. Knowledge and experience with medical terminology and ICD-10-CM and CPT4 coding. A working knowledge of coding and billing practices. Highly organized, self-motivated, detail-oriented and energetic team player. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be detail oriented. Strong computer skills including MSOffice, Internet, and E-mail. Good interpersonal skills.
